Caerphilly Flower with a Bonus Point Victory

It took just 1 minute for Caerphilly to take the lead in their latest National League Division 3 East A match against Fleur de Lys at the Constructaquote Stadium on the weekend as the team go in search of promotion to division 2, as they gained a bonus point victory by 42 points to 18.

From the outset Caerphilly set their stall out as they hunted a bonus point victory. Collecting from the kick off the home side spread the ball wide to the advancing Tom Candy. The full back catching the defence sleeping as he made the extra man outside to cross under the posts.

Having failed with a penalty attempt from outside half Scott Turner Fleur were then subjected to an onslaught which brought a try from Josh Hayward as the no.8 burst through in open play to score under the posts, outside half Matthew Hurley adding the additional 2 points in his flawless kicking afternoon.

A penalty kick from Turner reduced the deficit on 12 minutes, was followed 10 minutes later with another penalty miss before the side were awarded a series of penalties inside the 22 eventually leading to a try from right wing Kris Wheeler.

Despite attacking from deep, the home side’s handling was far from perfect, with the end of the first half looming the side had squandered at least 4 chances to cross the whitewash. Attacking at the end of the first half prop Kieran Thomas hit the line at pace and was unstoppable from 5 mtrs as he crossed the line for Caerphilly’s 3rd try, again Hurley adding the spoils.

Just minutes into the second half and with 13 point advantage at 21-8, the home side again broke down a Fleur attack in their own 22 and raced down the wing where centre Cyle Powell, playing in his first senior game was on hand to receive the pass and cross in the corner as he left the visiting defence for dead> Bonus point gained and Hurley adding 2 points with a difficult kick in swirling wind.

Weathering the storm from the visitors the home side again broke through flanker Josh Williams the next to cross on 66 minutes quickly followed by scrum half Joe Bray, Hurley adding the conversions for a commanding lead at 42-8. Fleur weren’t finished with the tie, however, to their credit. They managed 2 tries in the last 10 minutes as they camped on the Caerphilly line with the home side suffering a yellow card for persistent infringing in the red zone. Wheeler again crossing on 72 minutes before Captain Ross Dimmock went over at the end, both tries unconverted.

The win maintained Caerphilly’s 3rd place with 4 games remaining, equal on points with Oakdale who they play on Wednesday 3rd May away at Oakdale, who have just 2 games remaining.
