Brave Cobras edged out in Dai Classico!

It was great to welcome our old friends in Blackwood to the Gwyndy today, for a repeat of last year’s final. This game is fast becoming the modern day Dai Classico.

Blackwood are champions of Gwent and this was sure to be a real challenge.

First half: Cobras 0-3 Blackwood

As expected, these two fine sides largely cancelled each other out in the first half, with no quarter asked for or given. The rain poured throughout the game, which made the handling of both sides even more impressive, but moves from both sides inevitably ended with a brilliant tackle and a turnover.

Blackwood on the back of a strong scrum, utilised the kicking game constantly, turning our boys around, it was from one such move that they secured a penalty and went into half time with a three point lead.

Our best chance this half, was when we cleverly kicked the ball through, a strike that would have had Kevin Sheedy himself applauding, but Blackwood got back quickly to catch us holding on. We had a few penalties close to the Blackwood line, but couldn’t get over for the crucial score.

Second half: Cobras 0-6 Blackwood

This was another tight half, Blackwood dominating the first part and us the second, our defence was awesome today, every boy putting himself on the line, there won’t be many games where this Blackwood side don’t score a try.

However, an offside decision in front of the posts allowed Blackwood to extend their lead to six points.

The Cobras threw everything at Blackwood for the remainder of the match, with Cam, Shane and Luke running hard at the defence, but whenever we broke through, their lightning Jacklers were quickly over to snaffle the ball as we got isolated.

As the ref blew the final whistle, both sides shook hands, it was a game played in exceedingly good spirit.

The Cobras can be very proud of their performance, this was defeat to the strongest team in Gwent, by a paper thin margin and highlighted the improvement of the team since last year’s final. We will continue to improve and continue to enjoy our rugby under the excellent coaching team. You only ever lose in life when you quit…and these boys never do that.
