Cobras 19-14 Bridgend Athletic

Great to welcome back our friends from Bridgend, for a much anticipated re-match after they edged us out in a cracking game a few weeks ago.

Their coaches seemed to really know their stuff, I was sending out some spin passes in the warm up and one of them came over to me.. Did you ever play for Wales mate? When I explained that my knee injury had curtailed that ambition, he mumbled something about what a loss and how he would never have had so many caps himself If I’d stayed fit. Very odd..

First half:  Cobras 5-14 Athletic

Athletic are an extremely high quality team and in this first half they really showed it.

They dominated the first fifteen minutes and we couldn’t get out of our half, after a few close scrapes, we tried to counter attack from deep in our 22, but their excellent rush defence forced an intercept and their lightning centre was away to score. Try converted.

Straight from kick off they controlled the ball and attacked again.  We are missing tackles and they are playing exemplary rugby. The Cobras defend bravely, but, after prolonged pressure Athletic score again, their passing is superb and they crash through under the posts. Try converted.

14-0 down and fifteen minutes gone…this is going to be a real test of character.

The boys go into a Celtic huddle, a few message from the boys can be heard.. “Scotland 2010..Wembley 1999…Everton 1995..Thermopylae 480 BC…the meaning was clear, there would be no giving up today, not on these boys watch….

One area of dominance, was our mighty scrum..we knock the ball on in our own half, from the resulting scrum, we drive hard and win against the head, the ball goes wide and our backs almost go the length of the pitch…we camp on their line for five minutes before sucking their defence in and releasing Jac G, he still has much to do, but does it well.. he scores in the corner for a great team try! Harry just misses the conversion.

Second half:  Cobras 19-14 Athletic

Athletic continue to play well, a few times they almost score but we keep them out with some incredible tackling and Cam gets a vital turn over on our own line.

Our scrum continues to dominate, and running off the back of it, Luke is starting to cause havoc ..he’s like Xavier Rush in his pomp. From one such run, he gives the ball to Rhys, fast becoming our creator supreme, who gives it to Cam and well..you know how this ends..he beats some strong defence to go under the posts.

Athletic come back again, they look like scoring but knock on under pressure.  Shane has a good run to carry us upfield, Luc rampages forward, the ball comes to Rhys who carries deep into the Athletic half before timing a beautiful pass to Cam who races around the defence to go under the posts again.

Athletic attack again, this is fantastic rugby, but the Cobras defend with all they’ve got.
An Athletic knock on and the ref reaches for his whistle to end the game, what a marvellous match  👏  Both teams shake hands, it’s been an incredible game played in fantastic spirit and could have gone either way.

Player of the Match 
Was Luke, for carrying fantastically, his runs were unstoppable today and he worked his socks off in the scrum and rucks too, he will sleep tonight.  Well played indeed 👏
