It’s go Rhys Lightning! As Samuel writes a rugby manual!

It’s go Rhys Lightning! As Samual writes a rugby manual!

Cobras 19-5 Blaenavon

It was great to welcome one of the oldest clubs in Welsh Rugby to the Gwyndy this morning.  Blaenavon have a rich rugby history, with British Lions and numerous Welsh caps amongst their ex players, including the maestro Ken Jones, who scored the winning try the last time Wales beat the all blacks..

Wonder if there were any future Welsh internationals on display today, quite possible looking at the high standard of rugby.

Special mention to both sets of players and the crowd for exemplary silence as the armistice was honoured. We will remember.

First half:  Cobras 12-0 Blaenavon

Blaenavon are a very strong side, they had a very strong pack and were extremely competitive at the breakdown, they attacked hard for the opening period, whilst the Cobras defended with relish and didn’t give an inch, when the going was tough the tough got going today.

We score first, several good carries, lead to us being camped on the Blaenavon line, they defend vigorously, but give away penalties in their eagerness.
Eventually, we get the ball wide and Rhys is in for the try, it’s a really good finish.
Harry J converts well.

Snowy is battling hard in the loose and is carrying ferociously, crossing the gain line, but, the Blaenavon rush defence is keeping us pinned in our own half and we are looking all shook up…until..the Elvis of the valleys picks the ball up deep in our own half, with a shake of the hips and a shimmy..he’s through again…he carries deep into the Blaenavon half, getting caught just before the line, but it’s recycled and we are in the presence of rugby royalty as King Keagan is over to score, to the joy of his many subjects watching, it’s a great try.

Second half:  Cobras 19-7 Blaenavon

The second half was a tough ask for our depleted side, as Blaenavon used their big pack to attack constantly, but the defence was heroic. Blaenavon have a strong scrum and mighty lineout maul, which will surely prove a real weapon against other teams this season.

We strike first as Rhys picks up the ball well inside our own half, races to the wing and sets sail for the try line.. he has far too much to do here, with too many opposing defenders between him and the line..

But, from the crowd, a few ladies in pink jackets start to sing.. 🎵 go Rhys lightning 🎵 and he burns down the wing like Usain Bolt late for dinner…what a try!
Harry J converts beautifully.

Blaenavon never stop battling to their credit, we find ourselves on the wrong end of some penalties, allowing them close to our line, where eventually, after prolonged pressure from their big forwards, they go over for an unconverted try.

The Cobras are back on the attack though,  as a kick to touch ends the game.

Both teams shake hands at the end, it’s been a fine game played in great spirit and thanks to Kody for excellent reffing, never easy in such a competitive fixture with both sides hungry for a win.

Player of the match
Was Rhys, for a superb all round display, he’s strong, super fast and improving each week.  Well played indeed!

Love and hisses
