After two comprehensive wins on the bounce, 42-25 against Monmouth, followed by 65-10 away to Llanhilleth, the Green and White Army travelled to Caldicot last weekend full of confidence looking to extend their run. They met the league leaders in a determined mood, but despite the loss, the Virginia Park outfit left Gwent with their heads held high.
In a game of 2 halves, the home side took the first half, but certainly didn’t have it all their own way. Some extensive defensive patters kept Caldicot at bay. In fact, it took until the 33rd minute for the first score, a penalty kick from the Caldicot outside half after 2 earlier missed from. Caerphilly did well to keep Caldicot at bay, boasting a large pack and a larger second row. It was the set pieces where the visitors struggled, and in injury time at the end of the first half, having kept a catch and drive at bay, Caerphilly lost a scrum on their own line. Spinning the ball wide, the Caldicot centre burst through a gap to score under the posts for a converted try. Caerphilly had their chances, the best coming from centre Will Worthington, crossing the line but the ball held up.
The second half was a different affair, despite the set pieces, Caerphilly enjoyed the bulk of possession, spurning several chances for a kick at goal, and running from anywhere on the field. Several times did the visitors come close to the line, but the set piece proved their undoing, with no platform to build from. IT was the home side that had the last laugh, however. Breaking from inside their 22, captain and full back Nathan Griffiths tried to release winger Michael Lynch with a back of the hand pass. Coming off his wing, Lynch wasn’t quite where Gittings expected, and the pass went loose. The home side’s scrum half was awake to the situation and gathered the ball to score out wide, with just minutes on the clock, sealing the victory.
Caerphilly welcome RTB Ebbw Vale to Virginia Park Saturday week, before travelling to New Tredegar the first week of May, only Abercarn to slot in to complete their season. Elsewhere, Caerphilly Youth had a magnificent win away against Penallta by 24-17 with try’s by Ben and Thomas Candy, followed with a try and 3 penalties by Full back Liam Waters to seal a magnificent victory extending their lead at the top of the table. The two sides lock horns against this Friday as they both meet at Virginia Park in their Caerphilly and District Cup Semi Final. Kick off 7:15pm.
