Caerphilly Dare to Win

Caerphilly completed the double over RTB Ebbw Vale at the Constructaquote Stadium in Caerphilly last weekend, the home side gaining another big bonus point win in their quest for promotion. 4 first half tries including a hat trick for winger Gareth Dare produced the bonus point on the stroke of half time as full back Dewi Jones went over on the stroke of half time, outside half Matthew Hurley adding 3 conversions to his mammoth season total.

An uncharacteristic first half saw the home side’s handling let them down badly with numerous knock on’s holding their scoring at bay. Dare grabbed his first with some direct running on 12 minutes breaking through 3 tackles in centre field from the 10mtr line before rounding the full back to dive over, Hurley adding the spoils.

It took another 17 minutes before he grabbed his 2nd, flowing a steal at the lineout on the 5mtr line, the winger came off his wing creating an extra man in the centre and find a gap in the defence to dive over uncontested, Hurley again adding 2 points.
Dare completed his hat trick 7 minutes later, replacement  Jac Jonathon providing the killer pass out wide as both wingers combined to score out wide after the home side broke from their 22. Jones grabbed the last try of the half on the stroke of the whistle, this time the opposition defence were hanging on as he crossed the line, Hurley again adding 2 points.

Damian Corns was first on the second half scoresheet from a ruck on the 5 mtr line, the second row collecting from the back of the base to dive over with help from Lewis Crane. Another stolen lineout on 57 minutes almost produced another try, but an intentional knock on from the visitors full back robbed the Caerphilly back line from another try but gained a yellow card for the visitors. Despite making a hash of the drive for the line Caerphilly crossed eventually as coach Brett Davey rang the changes in the front row, and the replacement drove the visitors of their own ball for scrum half Joe Bray to put Hurley in space and score against the shell-shocked defence, adding the additional 2 points for good measure.

To their credit, the visitors scored 2 great tries as they threw caution to the wind with nothing to lose. A 43rd minute penalty was followed with a try from Damian Watkins followed by some good possession and interlinking for Dan Tomkins to go over out wide.

Turnover ball gifted replacement Josh Hayward a try on 60 minutes, as the flanker ran in from the half way line. Centre Will Worthington, making his first start for month following injury, grabbed 2 in the space of 5 minutes, his pace getting the better of the visitors out wide, replacement Jonathon getting a converted try in the 73rd.

Worthington finished the game off with his hat trick as he chased down a kick ahead to dribble the ball over the line to complete this victory.

Caerphilly 2nd team were dealt a blow as Rhydyfelin scored in the dying embers of the game to record a victory at the end by 20 points to 17. Caerphilly welcome promotion rivals Newport HSOB to the Constructaquote stadium next weekend, before hopefully travelling to Llanhilleth mid-week on the 11th Apr, just days before their National Bowl Final at the Principality Stadium on the 16th April. The 2ndXV travel to Caerleon in preparation for their Mel Davies Cup Final which will take place on Wednesday 12th April at Penygraig RFC, kick off 2:30pm
