Six try’s 5 Points Happy Christmas for Caerphilly

Caerphilly entertained Newport HSOB at Virginia Park last weekend and came away with a valuable 5 points to enter the second half of the season scoring 6 try’s in the process, centre Will Worthington grabbing a brace.

It took Caerphilly just 5 minutes to cross the whitewash. Starting deep in their own half the ball was pushed through the back and centre Worthington was on hand to cross, centre partner Simon Skinner adding the conversion.

A yellow car for second row Anthony Meads in front of the posts gave Newport a simple conversion to close the gap on the quarter hour mark, but the visitors failed to find the mark in the swirling wind. Neither side scored again in the first half as the difficult conditions failed to help both sides running game, ball handling akin to playing with a wet fish.

Another yellow for the home side on 49 minutes proved a catalyst to up their work rate scoring twice with flanker Tom Axenderry in the bin. The first for try prop Kieron Thomas, collecting the ball from a ruck just to the right of the posts, diving through unopposed, Skinner adding the conversion. This was quickly followed by a deft chip ahead and gather by Worthington for his second, skinner again adding the spoils.

Caerphilly didn’t have it all their own way, but some good defence kept the visitors at bay, until the 68th minute when Caerphilly won a scrum just outside the 5mtr line. A good drive from the pack saw them close to the line and No.8 Sam Haley was awake enough to collect the ball from the base and dive over for another try.

Left wing Josh Watkins capped a good day at the office in difficult conditions, minutes from the end, running in from the half way line wrong footing the defenders in the mud to score for another Skinner converted try.

On the opposite pitch the 2ndXV kept up their winning streak defeating Penygraig in the Dark by 14 points to 0 to stay top of the Rhondda and East Glamorgan League Division 3.

A Boxing Day break from the league sees Caerphilly travel to Senghenydd for a mouth-watering game at the Welfare Ground between these two rival sides. Kick off 12:00pm
