Is Liam supersonic? He definitely maybe!

Blackwood 31-Cae 0

Ahhh, Blackwood, famous for the manic street preachers,  picking up the titanic distress signal, Chartist leader Zephaniah Williams......and a cinema with cheaper tickets than Showcase.
The news on the grapevine was that they had a pretty strong team so we headed up for our first ever visit to Glan-Yr-Afon  park prepared for a big challenge and we weren’t to be disappointed..

First Half: Blackwood 24-Caerphilly 0

Injuries and the notorious bypass traffic meant we struggled for numbers at kick off and a huge Blackwood pack tore into us from the start.
Cae were shell shocked for the first ten minutes and Blackwood ran in a string of tries, shoving us backwards in the scrum, crashing through would be tacklers and then unleashing their fast backs to run in the tries.
This was a well drilled team at the top of their game, physically powerful, aggressive and with a great skill set, when the half time whistle went it was 24-0 and we all feared for what the second half would bring.

Second Half: Blackwood 31-0 Cae

One thing we’ve learned over the years, is to never write off this little green machine. The coaches gathered them together at half time and I listened in, it was impossible to hear full sentences above the singing of the crowd but I caught these words: “ Agincourt, Thermopylae, Dunkirk’ and the phrase “Scott Gibbs in 1999”.
I’m not sure what message the coaches were trying to convey but the team was transformed..
Sawyer gave a brief nod to his dad as if to say,” I’m ready to battle”and didn’t take a backward step from then on.. Liam started to cut the fly half supply line off by springing from the scrum and nailing him before he could get the pass away,he didn’t stop this game, playing like a Whirling Dervish after a can of red bull, he covered every blade of grass.
Blackwood tried to go through the pack but Big Lew soon disabused any player who thought that there might be a route that way.
When the ball did make the wing, twice threats were nullified by our wing speedster Kai, who made good ground to catch his opponent before tackling him into touch both times.
Now we had stopped Blackwood progress we began to play: In the space of a minute Kody showed marvellous hands to take a pass around his shoelaces and produced a tackle that almost caused an earthquake.
We camped on their line for ten minutes but just couldn’t get over the line, they were very streetwise at ruck time and were lucky the ref was unsighted with some Richie McCaw like defence..
Blackwood broke away right at the end to notch a final score and that was that.

Yes this was defeat, but whoever said you never really lose at anything if you don’t give up, called it right. The boys will gain great experience from this game, their character was tested, but it was a test they passed with flying colours. All parents can be proud of every player on this day.

Man of the match

Was Liam for an all action performance against the most physical team we’ve ever played. When asked what he put his performance down to, he replied: “My Dad is so good to my Mum, always doing the household chores so she can relax with a glass of wine, I dedicate this to him”.. aww shucks, the lad speaks the truth but there was no need to mention it here....onwards and upwards
