It’s the life of Riley as Jayden sends us home all smiley!

It’s the life of Riley as Jayden sends us home all smiley!

Caldicot away, our furthest trip in a season,  quite a nice drive though as long as the Brynglas tunnels aren’t closed...ah, wait a minute...

We came into this game in good form but looking for a return to winning ways after a narrow defeat last week.

First half:  Caldicot 0-33 Cae

Unfortunately Caldicot were short of a player so Sawyer kindly volunteered to play on their side. I say volunteered, but it was volunteering in much the same way that citizens of Portsmouth would volunteer to join the navy in the 18th century...

BANG! Charlie exploded into this game like a bullet out of a gun or an eleven yr old racing to an Xbox after school. He scored three sensational tries within the opening ten minutes and it seemed that the game might be over by half time.... but... that prediction didn’t take into account the determination of Sawyer to stamp his usual authority on the game and he bit into a few tackles like a hungry wolf and kept us at bay.

Ross scored the next try with a trademark strong run to cap off a fine half and Tom Evans scored a beauty, brushing off five would be tacklers to go in under the posts, when he touched it down the crowd roared and cheered, I’m not sure why...the lad smiled and waved back, must have been an inside joke...

To close the half Jayden won yet another scrum, then embarked on a charging run that took us deep into their half, before a knock on later in the move denied us a try.

Second Half:

Caldicot 5-40 Cae

In the interest of sportsmanship combined with a wish not have an early finish after a thirty mile drive, Tom L and Charlie swapped to the ranks of Caldicot for this half and as with Sawyer, soon proved their strongest players.

The second half was very odd, Cae attacked non stop for the duration but a combination of over confidence and white line fever along with our increasing ability to get on the wrong side of the ref meant we only scored one more try.

Our forwards completely dominated the ruck area, with the ball consistently being turned over whenever they took the ball into contact, but our inability to turn that constant supply of ball into points is something that we will need to work on.

Several certain tries were stopped by first Charlie and then Tom before Ross bagged his second of the morning with another strong run, as Caldicot tacklers were handed off two at a time as he galloped over. Ross converted his try himself with a graceful swing of the left boot making it look as easy as you like.

Evan, who had a fine game, almost scored in the corner but was felled just before the line and despite being hurt bravely carried on showing great attitude and character.

Jayden then perfectly executed a line out move, which almost resulted in him going over late in the half before two penalties against us saw them camped on our line before, who else, Tom Lewis, scored their only try of the day.

Not knowing of Tom’s kicking capability, they didn’t let him convert the try himself and it was duly missed as the final whistle blew.

Man of the Match

Was Jayden for a rambunctious performance, majestically galloping around the pitch like a gazelle in springtime throughout, whilst maintaining impeccable form at scrum and line out time. When asked what he put his brilliant performance down to he replied “with my Dad’s pre match offer to buy me the latest PlayStation game if I was Man of the Match, the writing was really on the wall from the start” wise words indeed, onwards and upwards....
