Hi Ho Hi Ho, To The Final The Youth Shall Go

Caerphilly Youth completed a monumental week with back to back victories over nearest rivals Penallta to all but win the Dragons Youth DB League and progress through to the final of the Caerphilly District Cup.

Following their 24-15 victory in their league fixture at Penallta last weekend, the side entered the Semi Final at Virginia Park with great optimism in a fixture that would have seen them as underdog in recent years. A large crowd was there to greet them, and they played their part well outscoring the current league champions by 3 tries and a zero score line.

There was only one side in the game, and the visitors only real excursion into the 22 was midway through the first half thanks to a deft kick ahead from the 10mtr line, which landed in the Caerphilly 5mtr area, the home side eventually clearing the ball ahead.

Caerphilly took the lead with a penalty from centre Liam Waters on 20 minutes. With the forwards immensely powerful the backs had great confidence to run the ball, and their first try came on the half hour stroke, starting from within their own half and finished by centre Lewys Willacott who burst through the defence to run in. Despite experiencing the majority of play, the half ended with the score line at just 8-0.

The second half saw Caerphilly take control of the match with majority possession and territory, tackling hard and running harder to keep the visitors at bay, indeed the visitors never had a chance as the Caerphilly defence kept every attack at bay before turning possession into points.

Firstly scrum half and Captain Tom Candy was on hand to accept a pass from the floor following a great burst and drive through the centre from the forwards, scoring under the posts for Waters to add the conversion. Candy was on hand just minutes later to collect from the base of the ruck as a scrambling Penallta defence was forced to haul down outside half Alex Stickler just inches from the line, Candy twisting and turning against 3 defenders to cross the line.

Despite the 20-0 score line, there remained 15 minutes on the clock, however, the home side kept their nerve and continued to attack, and despite scoring no further points, any attempt to attack from the visitors was met by a solid wall of defence before time eventually ran out.

Caerphilly will meet either Rhymney or Senghenydd who clash at the heads of the valleys ground on Tuesday 26th April.
