U15's - "Cae Topple Ironmen In Renewed Rivalry"

Match Report - Caerphilly v Merthyr - 12 KO - Sunday 30 September

Caerphilly under 15's welcomed a strong and physical Merthyr team for what turned out to be hard fought but entertaining encounter. Conditions were overcast and breezy to start with, but this was followed by equal measures of all seasons in one day with a fair amount of drizzle before the sun eventually broke through.

The first score of the game was to set the tone for the match with a penalty for a high tackle providing a good platform from which to launch an attack. Scott Pritchard makes a great run and made a well-timed pass to Abhishek who makes good ground. Owen Hughes then straightens up the line to make further ground and the ball is then recycled quickly by Wil Lewis at scrum half who chooses a well-timed pass for Ellis Hughes to run rough the gap to score.

Merthyr responds strongly though and their strong running number 12 is tackled by Wil Lewis and Scott Pritchard wins a valuable turnover. Great defence from across the team enables Will Haley to clear the home team's line but the pacey Merthyr full back runs back for a great score and tie the match at 5-5. The tough uncompromising encounter continues with great tackling on both sides.

Caerphilly were soon to nudge ahead again, with great passing along the line as seen in previous games, putting Abhishek into space. The strong running forward duly crashes through 3 tackles before offloading to Scott Pritchard in support, who then straightens up again to put Connor Mayo into space on the wing to score.

The home team then go two scores clear in a critical part of the game, with Will Haley launching a long kick down field, which he follows up on, achieves a turnover and give to Josh Morkot who makes great yardage before a deft offload back to Haley who crosses unchallenged for a 15-5 lead.

The determined Merthyr XV though are still coming and they keep the ball tight in the home 22 this time to crash over and bring the score back within 1 score at half time.

The second half sees the composure and fitness of the home team come through and a fumbled line out is pounced upon by Scott Pritchard who kicks through and regathers the bouncing ball to score and take the game to 20-10.

The forwards met the Merthyr challenge head on throughout the second half with Callum Morris taking some nice restarts, and Lewis Adams making space for the backline to use the ball in space. The Merthyr team eventually clear their lines following a period of sustained pressure with a kick down field but Ellis Hughes straightens up and creates space for Connor Mayo out wide to score for a 25-10 win.

Well done to both teams for a hard-fought match, and great to see the boys secure their 5th win of the season against another strong opponent. The Merthyr coaches voted Will Haley as player of the match for his strong runs and variation of play. Congratulations to the whole team for another hard-fought victory. #togetherasone.
