Little green army Cian as mustard as Cooper shines!

Little green army Cian as mustard as Cooper shines!

So with the sun shining and the grass newly shorn, the dearly beloved gathered for the first home match of 2015/2016. What will this season bring? Tries aplenty, textbook tackles, top rucking and  some stunning moves that would make the baa baas blush are guaranteed along with another legendary tour to top it off. Note to parents of new players, it's important to remember that what goes on tour stays on tour ( I still maintain that it wasn't my fault, that really could have happened to anybody..)

anyhow, to today's games, two great performances from the lads today, it's important to look past the scores and revel in the fact that all involved played excellently and really showed some mettle.

Cae 3-4 Tondu

First half:  Cae 3-2 Tondu

We awaited kick off with no little trepidation: We've played Tondu every year since our formation in season 2012/2013 and our closest score so far had been 3-10.
However this was to be very different, after an early setback the boys really went about their business with aplomb. Liam winning some quality ball at the ruck and Tom and Ryan sparkling in the backs. Tom glided over in the corner to level up the scores and then flew brilliantly off the line to intercept a Tondu pass and put Ryan over in the corner. Cae continued to dominate the half, before Tondu levelled things up with a break away try, before Ryan scored again as Cae finished the half on top.

Second half:  Cae 3-4

Tondu came flying out of the traps in this half but Cae met fire with fire and gave a good account of themselves, Sawyer prominent with some big tackles and new player Jessica making a really bold showing with some good runs, the defensive effort was best summed up by Kai who chased down Tondu's fastest player from a long way out to make a try saving tackle. whilst Jayden competed well at the breakdown,  big Ryan and Lewis made some good barnstorming runs.
With time running out and the game heading for a draw I was just making a note that this was the first time that Liam's cousin Charlie hadn't scored against us in the last four years when almost inevitably he popped up on the right wing to score and win the game for them.
well done Charlie boy! .....please let Liam win next time, it's definitely his turn....

Cae v Tonyrefail

We've had some good games with Ton over the years and it's usually pretty even, there was to be no change today.

First half:  Cae 3-1 Ton

Cae flew out of the traps here and played some good rugby, Oliver and Ollie playing well, Jack made a superb long run, Nyle scrapping at the breakdown and Cam's crunching tackles setting up turnovers. Ryan scored the first try, before Kody in typical fashion stormed over after a great move, before the champagne moment of the game.., Ton were pressed deep in their half before they took advantage of the new rules to kick the ball clear from the 22 deep into our half, a great clearance you would think? Yes, unless the ball is picked up by a certain little Ryan... He picked the ball up in his own 22 and proceeded to side step his way back through the entire Ton side to go over in the corner. brilliant!

second half: Cae: 5-6 Ton

Ton caught us cold at the start of the half when one of their players went the length of a pitch to score a great try. We hit straight back though with a try from Cian who picked the ball up in midfield, pinned his ears back and went over in the corner for a brilliant score. Tom stretched the lead further before Ton started to turn the screw and began to attack in waves.  The boys gave everything they had in defence with Sean, Ben and Dylan giving it their all but ultimately we just fell short.

Man of the Match was Cian for an all round great performance marked by some brave tackles and topped off with an excellent try.  When asked his views on the World Cup, he opined that if the Welsh boys put in the same sort of performance as he did today they would surely go much further than Ireland, probably winning the whole thing. Let's hope so young Cian! Onwards and Upwards...
