Green clad heroes shine! But... does anyone fancy a cup of deja vu?

Green clad heroes shine!  But.... does anyone fancy a nice cup of deja vu?

Cae 10-13 Risca

Pride

On a beautiful Spring day we headed off to Dave Parade
We played in the sun, because these green boys can’t be put in the shade
With guts and determination they gave their all for the shirt
And sure for a while this result might hurt
But.... lasting memory will be pride in the way that they played..

First half: Cae 5-5 Risca

I heard the coaches before kick off.  Fists pumping they urged the boys to forget the last time they played Risca, this was a new day..our day..

The important thing was to start fast and make no early mistakes. So, we kick off and are called for offside by the ref....

From the penalty,  Risca attack, ominously they recycle the ball and cut through us with ease to notch the first try. The conversion is missed but this isn’t the best first minute of rugby we’ve ever played.

As bad as the first minute was, the rest of this match was to herald probably the best effort we’ve ever produced..

The lads steeled themselves and refused to take a backward step. Charlie our very own  Bonnie Prince was magnificent this game and several huge tackles sewed the seeds of doubt in the opposition.

The ball comes out of a ruck, through the hands of Kai, Tom L, Kody,  Jack L, Henry and Tom Evans and we nearly score. The ball is recycled and comes back to Titanium Tommy, who with a breathtaking vision that belies his tender years puts a chip over the top for Cam to chase...Cam sprints after it, moving like a cheetah racing for the armchair before the final episode of game of thrones starts...and he’s reached it! We draw level!

The rest of the half is an even battle, up front Sawyer, Morgan, Ross, Lewis , Liam, Jack E and Adam battle for everything and when Risca do break through, there is that little JPR of Generation Z, Iron Ryan, waiting at full back to shut the door in their faces...

Second half Cae 10-13 Risca

The boys were brilliant this half and were on top for the most part.  Early on Risca won a penalty for one of ours going over the top and much to everyone’s surprise, kicked it, to go three points ahead. We all hoped that wouldn’t have an effect at the end....

We came flying back though with attack after attack. Little Ry giving everything, sprinting/twisting/shimmying every which way but loose trying to break free. Tommy E had a good run..Ross smashed his way forward making massive yardage...

Charlie bursts through but the ball comes loose over the line..so close.

We get a penalty, it goes short to Charlie, who won’t be denied this time.  He takes on five/six defenders and carries them over the line as we take the lead for the first time.

Now boys, just stay calm, take the kick off, go through your practiced exit procedure and clear your lines....noooooo, we’ve been turned over and Risca break through to score and go ahead again.

Five minutes to go and we attack non stop, playing with purpose and determination, Jayden, Alex and Ieuan are battling for everything and we are all on the edge of our seats.

With time almost up, Charlie makes a brilliant break, three tacklers eventually bring him down, but he flips the ball inside brilliantly and Liam, in support, takes it with a clear run to the try line! Yes! That’s it! Surely we will win now and bury the hoodoo from last year! Get in you beauties!

No, wait, the linesman has spotted an earlier infringement... it’s a penalty back on the half way line to Risca. They kick to touch and it’s game over! Argh, so close again...

Conclusion:

Forget the result! What a brilliant performance and superb way to round off the season. Pride is the word of the day. The pride the boys clearly showed for the green shirt they wore and the pride of all the parents and coaches in their performance, everyone rightly stood and cheered the boys off the pitch at the end of the game.

Well done everyone, enjoy the summer break, but....can’t wait for next season now!
