Iron Ieuan captures the fortress of the legion

Iron Ieuan captures the fortress of the legion!

Happy New year!  Caerleon? We’ve played them somewhere before...

After losing that thrilling game against Caerleon in last seasons plate final, it was fair to say that the lads were quite keen to impress today,  but with all the rustiness that the recent break would surely bring, could they rise to the occasion?

First half: Caerleon 0- 19 Cae

Urm...not much sign of rustiness here to be fair.

Charlie picks the ball up on half way and breaks to the opposing 22, we almost go over but they resist and turn the ball over, only to see our boys tackle them into touch. From the line out we spread the ball across the pitch, our lightening speedster Kai takes it close before Ross throws a lovely switch pass to Titanium Tom Lewis to go over.

We dominated the next ten minutes but they resist boyfully....until....Bonnie Prince Charlie picks up from the back of a scrum and gallops away to go over. Tom converts.

Caerleon, showing the determination that they always bring to a game came on strongly  towards the end of the half and might have scored if a certain R. Williams couldn’t tackler like JPR facing an English winger...

From the resultant scrum on our 22, we get the ball into the hands of Ryan and the legendary “Nijinsky of the valleys” does the rest, leaving six home defenders clutching at thin air. Tom converts.

Second half: Caerleon 0-38 Cae

We attack from the kick off but a knock on leads to a scrum.  We dominated the scrum today and win against the head but spill the ball allowing them to break, a good tackle leads to a turnover and Charlie sprints away before a well timed pass allows Tommy Evans to show his pace and sprint away to score.

We remain in the front foot, Liam manages to make a break, Kai takes it further forward and Jayden gets the ball away quickly from the ensuing ruck, before Tom L goes into full Phil Bennett mode to jink and sprint away to notch his second try of the day.  Tom Converts.

Our final try comes when Tom and Ry bring out their specialty move, that was shown to such good effect in the Sneggy cup match.  A perfectly judged kick and Ry sprints on to it to go over. Tom converts to complete the scoring.

Conclusion

This was a great start to the new year, with the boys playing really well as a cohesive team unit and with a noticeably improved tackling display against a good Caerleon side.

Man of the Match was Ieuan for a superb scrum half display, marshalling the pack as required and ensuring quick ball for the backs.

Many thanks to Mr J Riley for his expert match analysis
