U15's - "Tough Day At The Office"

Match Report - Saturday 20 January - Caerphilly v Llanishen - KO 11.30 at Vetro Recruitment Stadium - Final Score 7-41.

It was another overcast and mizzly winter January morning to greet both teams today. A great take from the kick off by Ioan hill sets a positive tone to start, and the ball is recycled well under intense pressure. The visitors eventually turnover the ball though and Ellis Hughes gets back to drop on the ball and win a drop out.

Logan Turner wins a great line out, however the ball is dropped in midfield and from the scrum, the visitors are clinical and make the first score under the posts - 0-7.

A strong, last-ditch tackle from Cian O’Sullivan on their big number 15 forces a knock on and enables the home team to clear their lines from the restart. Another turnover and run forward from Scott Pritchard wins a penalty for the home team and they make ground into the visitors’ 22.

Llanishen then run strongly out of defence and it’s Cian O’Sullivan and Ioan Hill again making another great tackle to force a turnover.

The home team then make ground and another great line out take from Logan Turner is moved out to Scott Pritchard who runs back against the grain to suck in the defence. Ioan Hill in close support takes the ball at pace and sets the ball back - Lewis Adams passes to Will Haley who holds the ball, draws the man and makes a well-timed pass to Owen Hughes, who goes straight through the gap to score under the posts and tie the scores at 7-7.

Outstanding tackling from Will Haley, Logan Turner, Eli Weekes and Cian O’Sullivan keep the Llanishen response out. However, they just keep coming and in the end, a kick behind the solid defence is pounced on by their winger to take the lead with 5 mins to go to half time.

Relentless tackling by Will Haley, Logan Turner, Owen Hughes and Connor Mayo stem the tide but eventually the pressure tells and Llanishen score in the corner 17-7 on the stroke of half time. Another tackle from Connor Mayo on the wing saves a try.

The second half starts brightly for the Caer XV with a penalty won and nice kick ahead to set up play on half way.

Caer bring it forward again and Will Haley makes a great cross kick and wins a penalty with Llanishen off side. Further pressure wins a penalty on the Llanishen line but the ball is turned over on the line and the visitors run the full length of the field to score, despite some great covering back by Ellis Hughes 7-22. This was a real sucker punch try, having been on the line and potentially closing the gap to 12-17.

The effect of the try was evident from the next restart with the momentum now with the visitors. From the restart Llanishen move the ball and run back strongly, making a great offload to their big wing to score under the posts 7-29.

To the boys’ credit they never give up, and Eli Weekes makes another try saving tackle, followed by Owen Hughes who is quick up in defence to make a great tackle - Logan Turner makes another try saving tackle but in the end the visitors’ number 9 scores from a quick tap free kick. 7-36.

From the next line out Llanishen run the full length of pitch to score 7-41. Strong runs by Scott Pritchard and Connor Mayo towards the end of the game are again held just short.

It was one of those days today. In the end, the momentum swung strongly to the visiting team when they achieved a 2 score swing 15 minutes into the second half. Well done to the boys for keeping going to the end against really strong opposition. Rest up, regroup and come back stronger #togetherasone
