Episode 2

Episode 2……….

Well as you are all probably aware our regular roving reporter Mr Shaughnessy is off saving others in a different part of the galaxy this week, rumour has it he is actually watching the gee gees and spending time in a hot tub but that hasn’t been corroborated so we will just go with ‘allegedly’. Lewis claims he can’t write as he has to save his hands for drumming and Mr Riley is swabbing the decks on kitchen duty so unfortunately for the rest of you, you will have to make do with my ‘once in a lifetime’ (again Mr Shaunghnessy!) attempt at a match report. So then how did I start this last time………ah yes que the music and title sequence of words scrolling up the screen……….

A Long time ago in a galaxy far far away ………….  Episode 2

You may recall that when we last heard from our brave Rebel army they had been on the wrong side of a few skirmishes in the past few weeks against the might of the Greater Gwent Imperial Empire. Today would see them being attacked by the medium sized Imperial outpost of Ebbw Vale. Once a thriving Industrial steel producing spaceport now twinned with Tatooine. History books are sketchy but it is claimed that this spaceport provided 40,000 bricks to construct the Empire State Building and steelwork for the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the planet Earth.  Also, it is rumoured to have produced the steelwork that housed the ION cannon in the second Death Star. They are known as the Steelmen, men wearing steel or as you and I more commonly know them as Imperial Stormtroopers!

First Half Caerphilly 12 Ebbw Vale 17

Today’s game took place on the ice planet of Hoth, (well it certainly felt like it for those sat in the shade), and it was our brave Rebel Army who had to defend their Echo Base against this new attack. Unusually for us we had our forces bolstered by some new recruits to the resistance with the addition of Alex, Adam and Louie, welcome to the battle lads. The half opened with an explosive nature as Charlie claimed the kick off and pressed forward, the ball was quickly re-cycled and spread along the backs and after some swift work the ball came to Charlie once more and he stormed through to give the Rebels and early lead. This was then extended by a good conversion from Tom L.  Soon the Empire started their fight back and after some hard-fought tackling on our part and impressive handling on theirs they too crossed our line on two occasions. This was closely followed by a third for the Empire but this Rebel Army as we all know is a plucky bunch and Charlie with the strength of a Wookie made another charging run down the wing only to be brought down short of the line but a quick pop up pass and the ever-present Liam in close support saw him, although almost upside down, cross the line and score.

Second Half Caerphilly 12 Ebbw Vale 42

This is the half that is best described as ‘The Empire Strikes Back’. Wave after wave of attack came from the Empire, like a marauding bunch of Wampas they consistently drove into the heart of our base and showed quick hands and lightspeed pace out wide. Our Rebel army never gave up though, on and on they fought hoping for the luck of the bounce to help turn the tide but in the end and on this occasion, it was not to be.

No man of the match this time but know that we are all proud of this Rebel team. Yes, there are things to learn and improve on, there always will be, but you all take the field week in week out through your own choice and face and battle against whatever the Empire may throw at you, whether that be Imperial AT-AT’s or 6ft twelve-year olds, which does every single one of you credit. Today was not entirely your day, but there is always next time, keep going not so little green army and your time will come.

Long live the Rebellion…….and as ever may the force be with you.
