Cae 29-12 Sneggy

So, the biggest game of any season...but....even bigger this year because it was a quarter final.

Celtic V Rangers, Boca v River, Madrid v Barca, all create a bit of excitement I suppose but there isn’t a sporting event anywhere in the world like this..families are divided, neighbours glare over the garden fence and children who happily sit next to their friends all week at St. Cenydd or St Martin schools put aside their pencil cases, don scrum caps and prepare to battle each other.

Sneggy have within their ranks now, three brilliant ex Caerphilly players in Nyle, Adam and Big Ry, lovely to catch up with you again boys and also great to see your rugby development.

Right then, who would prevail..would it be the green or the red and blue with bragging rights at the end?

One last thing...it was incredibly moving to see the way both sides impeccably observed the armistice silence this morning.  These sides are a credit to their generation and it was a worthy tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we could all have fun at a game of rugby today.

First half:  Cae 10-5 Sneggy

Sneggy are a vastly improved side and it was clear from the start that this was going to be a close game, with Nyle elegantly controlling matters from fly half and Adam running with power and strength they were soon on the front foot.
A line out near our line and Big Ry drives the saints forward and they are over the line for the first score.

The crowd roared! Or at least Jess did and her whoops of delight could probably have been heard in the Sneggy club house.
Not wanting to hear that again this half, our boys galvanised themselves and worked their way into the game.

We were much better technically today than we have been for the last month, the extra training yesterday clearly made a massive difference, especially the line out drills.
The line out was a real area of advantage today and it was the way we scored our first try: a catch and drive expertly controlled by the pack led to Ross smashing over to level things up.

The rest of the half was a real battle with both teams cancelling each other out through some excellent tackling. Our boys dominated the set piece and that allowed us to control territory. Jayden, that master of the dark hooking arts was on fire today, stealing countless scrums against the head as well as running hard in the loose and from one  of these steals Charlie burst through for a timely try to take the lead.(talking of timely Charlie...cough cough)

Second half: Cae 29-12 Sneggy

The boys got on top this half and played some excellent rugby, with Big Lew leading the drive in the scrums and running in the loose like a wild bull in the Argentine pampas, he caused havoc all game.
Next up was a candidate for try of the season..Jayden and Ross made the initial inroads through the Sneggy defence before our resident Magician “Tommy Merlin Lewis” used his left foot wand to chip over the onrushing defence for Little Ry to touch down.

We powered through again and after prolonged pressure breached the heroic  Sneggy defence with a charging run from Jack Llewellyn. This try was converted by Tom.

Any thought that Sneggy would roll over was soon disabused.  A massive hit in the middle of the park, led to a spilled ball, which was swooped on by Adam who ran half the length of the pitch to score a great try. This try was superbly converted by Nyle.

The final say went to our lads though, as Ross stormed over after several string phases from the lads. Tom converted to end proceedings.

Man of the Match

Was Big Lew for leading a dominant pack in the scrum, tackling like a Trojan and the wild bull malarkey....when asked what he put his outstanding performance down to, he replied. “Sneggy in the quarter final of the cup? Do you really have to ask?”

The lad has a point, onwards and upwards for the green army!
