Wham Bam, thank you Cam!

 Wham Bam, thank you Cam!

St Julians 5-22 Cae

Those of you familiar with the writings of that sixth century gossip “Gildas” will know that St Julius was martyred in Caerleon in the third century, his memory now kept alive in the name of a Newport district and a pretty decent rugby team.
It was rugby rather than roman history that brought us here in big numbers today though, I noticed many Welsh rugby fans looking oddly out of their cars on the M4 at the succession of cars with green scarves hanging out of the window Newport bound. ‘I thought we were playing Italy not Ireland???”
It was great today, to see so many people that can’t usually make it due to sibling sport, in attendance, thanks to cancelled games...would they all see a victory though?

First half: St Julians 0-17 Cae

The young saints had much the better of the first ten minutes and it looked like being a very difficult day at the office for the little green army.
However, gradually, the team started to assert itself, getting on top up front and making inroads. A clever kick over the top was chased by the lightening quick Tommy E who ensured that the home side had no easy options for clearance, eventually the ball was turned  over and the ball went through the hands before our speedster Kai got his hands on it and raced over to break the deadlock.
We now took control and Charlie scored a brilliant individual try, galloping down the wing and beating countless tacklers before scoring.
A third try followed when a wonderful sprint from Cam ended with a pass to Kody who burst through a few would be tacklers and ensured the ball was recycled to Charlie who was ten yards out. Let’s be honest, is there an 11 yr old in Wales that can stop a sprinting Charlie from ten yards?  And he duly scored. Tom L added the extras to leave us with a comfortable lead.
There was just time to see one of those trademark little Ry tackles before halftime. Their speedy winger beat three defenders leaving only little Ry to beat....but that is like an Englishman in the 1970s discovering he was through and only had JPR to beat....the end result was similar here to those that took on the Tondu terror and the winger was soon despatched into touch with little ceremony.

Second half: St Julians 7-22 Cae

St Julians are a good side and we knew they would come back hard at us, with the option of fresh legs they began to dominant a tiring Cae side and would have scored on several occasions apart from some brilliant tackling from Cam who had impressed in attack in the first half, the big winger on the opposition team surely could not have expected such ferocious defence but Cam is as brave as they come and yields to no man.
Those parents who remember the touch rugby days will have felt nostalgic at what happened next: Cae were under severe pressure when little Ry picked the ball up deep in his own half ; would he take the sensible option and kick or embark on a dizzying run that would have had Shane Williams acknowledging his superior? It was the latter of course and he side stepped and shimmied past the entire opposition before utilising blazing pace to leave the last few bedraggled defenders clutching at thin air to score under the posts.
The scoring was finished by St Julians who secured a well deserved consolation try but this was to be a green day as the whistle blew.

Man of the Match

Was Cam for an incredible performance of top class attacking and heroic defence.  If a tank came straight towards him he would offer it a steely glare, bend his knees and drive it into touch, I have no doubt about that.  When asked what he put his fantastic display down to he replied “this performance is for my Mam and all Mams everywhere on this special day”.  Fine words indeed, onwards and upwards!
