Cae go close as Sawyer chops (Black)wood!

Cae go close as Sawyer chops (black)wood!

Cae 12-17 Blackwood

It’s great to see that  all the hard work of our retention and recruitment committee has really paid off this season:.So a big hello to Adam, Alex and Louie, great to see how well you’ve all settled in and are already making such a positive contribution on the pitch so early in your Cae career, keep up the good work and all the best for your future in green.

This was only our second ever meeting with Blackwood in eight years and the last one was a real game to forget, not just because of that unpleasant incident in Starbucks after the game (How was I supposed to know what a vacuum coffee was?)  but also for the way our boys received a right tatering...

So, buoyed by last week’s cup win, we go again..

First half:  Cae 0-0 Blackwood

This scoreline might remind older readers of all those freezing Cardiff City V Rochdale fixtures in the 1980s, but on the rugby side this was our first ever blank half in our entire history.

The phrase “arm wrestle” was surely invented just to describe this half of rugby, as both sides battled themselves to a standstill as if they were Hittites and Egyptians on the battlefield of Kadesh.

Sawyer patrolled the ruck area like his Dad watching the traffic networks of South Wales, stepping in whenever a jam was forming to come away with the ball and making sure there was smooth access as required by our scrum half and always on hand supporting the attack.

Whenever he was breached little Ry awaited the opposition at full back, always ready to show any deluded attacker that the way to our try line was blocked by the junior rugby equivalent of Hadrian’s wall and like the Picts of yesteryear the Blackwood attackers were always repelled.

Second half: Cae 12-17 Blackwood

The second half was as open as the first half was as..urm..closed?....

Bonnie Prince Charlie picked the ball up in his own half and galloped forward, he was brought down just before the line, but popped the ball up beautifully to keep the move going. The ball was recycled wide and Kody smashed his way through some would be tacklers to go over for the first score, this was superbly converted from wide out by Ross.

Blackwood now came on really strongly.  Scoring three tries with fast flowing rugby that we just couldn’t live with, both forwards and backs combining well to produce some great rugby, although we didn’t help ourselves with some loose tackle attempts.

As always though, our boys didn’t stop competing and Charles scored again to out us with a  score of the opposition.

The last five minutes saw us well on top and we were possibly unlucky not to find another score to win the game, but as hard as we pressed, the breakthrough just wouldn’t come before a loud blast on the refs whistle brought the game to an an end.

Man of the Match

Was Sawyer, for a dynamic game in the loose, running strongly and playing with real intelligence to secure ball in that deadly minefield that is the ruck area.  When asked what he put his fine play down to, he replied..  “well, I saw Wales win live yesterday and thought I’d show old Gatland that the future of welsh rugby is in good hands’

Wise words indeed, onwards and upwards....

Footnote

Out outstanding fly half, Tom, took a heavy knock this game. Everyone at the club wishes him all the best for a speedy recovery
