Kai’s the guy as Cae Fly!

Kai’s the guy as Cae Fly!

Pontyclun 0-17 Cae

In the 1860s the Cornish copper industry declined and a large number of this workforce departed to work in Pontyclun at the Iron ore mine, it was the challenge of facing the descendants  of these hardy sons of Kernew that stood before us today.  So Pasties in hand we headed past Leekes for our second ever visit to the home of the mighty Badgers (not the most inspiring of rugby nicknames admittedly, but I suppose it was either that or Penguins with that kit)

First half: Pontyclun 0-10 Cae

With only fifteen fit players and a big muddy playing field awaiting the team, this was always going to be a long day in the office.
Pontyclun dazzled at the start, with aggressive forward play and beautiful passing it was backs to the wall for the first ten minutes and nerves were jangling amongst the parents on the sidelines who were all sinking slowly into the mud/quicksand so had to keep moving.
But then, Tom, spotting that the opposition bizarrely didn’t have a full back in position placed a perfect kick over the top and we were away, through the hands it went before a magical tip pass from Jack L, that would have had Tommy Cooper bowing before him, sent Tom L in for the try. brilliant stuff!
Kai was having an absolute barnstormer of a game, bravely putting his hands in amongst the feet at ruck time and playing a defensive blinder with lightening quick closing down from the scrums and iron tackling.
The forwards got on top as the half wore on with Ross bossing the opposition and making ground, before the backs spun it through the hands again to Henry on the wing and stormed over from a long way out, he really is the Mr Consistent of the side.

Second half: Pontyclun 0-17 Cae

We had the bit between our teeth this half, controlling play for the most part and playing with no little aplomb. Jack E took a big hit but bravely shrugged it off and tore back into the fray. Jayden took several scrums against the head, he’s a real master of the hookers art and Joe had several strong runs on the wing.
Eventually the pressure paid off as Liam, stopped just short of the line, popped the ball up for Charlie to go over for a try under the posts converted by Tom.
Tom E showed up strongly in defence and attack and Big Lew made good ground with several carries as we continued to dominate.
We were victims of our own over enthusiasm in the last ten minutes as Sawyer, Charlie and Liam scrambling for possession were whistled at more often than Fido, winner of the 1989 one man and his dog grand final in Lochglennie. Need to learn when to go and when not to go lads...

Man of the Match

Was a well deserved accolade for that lightening quick speedster Kai, ruck time was more akin to all I’m wrestling than rugby today but that didn’t faze him one bit, often charging in himself when the forwards weren’t about and delivering quick ball consistently to set our dashing backs on their way.  When asked what he put his brilliant performance down to, he replied “if you go back in time you may see that Jackson is a name of Scottish or English origin, but I wanted to play so well today that all in attendance would be left in no doubt that I’m a lad from Wales!’ Fine words indeed, onwards and upwards!
