King Kody rings the bells of Rhymney!

Cae 10-15 Rhymney

King Kody rings the bells of Rhymney!

Happy New Year!  Our first game of 2017 at the Estadio Nacional Virginiao brought our friends from the top of valley to town.  Rhymney is famous for two things, the legendary folk song "The bells of Rhymney' a classic track on the Byrds album "Mr Tambourine Man" and being the place you have to walk back to Caerphilly from if you've had a few too many beers and fall asleep on the last train...

First half: Cae 0-10 Rhymney

First game of the new year and things were going to change I tell you! No more would the boys concede a try in the first thirty seconds, as with every game in 2016, oh no, that was a thing of the past. What? Did Rhymney just score? Yes, after 29 seconds...
Still, you have to admire that lad that scored it, brilliant try, beating most of our players to go over! Wait a minute.... he looks a bit like Kody....umm, he looks a lot like Kody...it is Kody! He's kindly stepped in to play for our undermanned opponents and is preceding to stomp all over us. Charming!
Rhymney scored again shortly after as the Caerphilly lads tried to shake off the rust that eating chocolates every day for a fortnight brings.
The last ten minutes were much more evenly contested though, but Rhymney played with a tad more aggression and flew into every break down whilst our lads hesitated making it very difficult for us to secure the quick ball vital to release our spring heeled backs.

Second half:  Cae 10-15 Rhymney

The start of this half brought a third try for Rhymney and things were starting to look ominous, could we stem the tide? Yes, we could was the answer quickly delivered. The one constant with this team of little green giants since their formation back in 2012, is that they have a backbone that a blue whale would be proud of, they simply don't accept defeat and never stop trying. That mercurial wingman Tom Evans scored with a lovely inside run, dodging several opponents and then sprinting away to score and this was followed by a try from that foreman of the engine room Charlie, who crashed over to bring us within one try of our opponents.
For the rest of the half Cae held the edge but Big Lew who had joined Rhymney for the second half played well with some big runs, keeping us on the back foot.
Kody who was the best player in the first half in Rhymney colours, changed shirts and was Cae's best player in the second but despite his best endeavours we couldn't get that equalising score.

Man of the match

Was Kody for a superb double agent performance, shining for both teams with his hard running, tackling, rucking and well taken try, it's a well deserved accolade for a top player. When asked who he dedicated this fine performance to, he replied "well, as you know Jim, I have a real rugby expert at home, someone who knows the rules inside and out and gives me top tips, I can't fail to play well really.  So I dedicate this award to my Mam, I do wish she'd pass these tips on to Dad though..." fine words indeed, onwards and upwards for the little green army!
