Penallta v Caerphilly at Sue Noakes Leisure Centre - KO Midday - Final Score 12 – 19

On an unseasonably warm but overcast Sunday morning, the green army took to the field against an impressive and well matched Penallta team. The open exchanges set the tone for the match with positive play from both teams stopped only by outstanding tackling.

Early exchanges saw the home team kick to clear their lines, with great follow-up tackling by Ellis Hughes and Wil Lewis keeping Penallta in their own half. Eventually though some greater urgency at the breakdown saw Penallta release their backs to score the first try of the match.

Spurred on however, Caer made some good progress into the home team's half. From the line out, Penallta cleared their lines but the ball was fielded by Connor Mayo on half way who straightened up to run through the defence for the visitors' first score, deftly converted by Haley.

The score seemed to settle the cheesemen, who established a pattern of great teamwork with the forwards taking the ball up to create space out wide. Abhishek demonstrated this when he took the ball from a penalty straight up the middle, to create space to release the back line. Cian O'Sullivan recycled the ball for the backs to move the ball the other way with good hands enabling Ellis Hughes to score in the corner.

The game continued to move from end to end with a great turnover by Ioan hill on the line enabling a clearing kick by Haley. The home side's pressure was however relentless and eventually Penallta scored a well-deserved try to tie the game with 15 mins to go.

It was fitting that the winning try came from another turnover and pick up from Scott Pritchard as a result of some aggressive forward play at the breakdown and the visitors took the lead with 15 minutes left on the clock.

The final quarter represented an awesome team display with great passing first seeming to reward Owen Hughes with a try in the corner (only to be denied by the TMO and corner flag!) and then a further back move putting Wing Connor Mayo in the clear only to be pulled back for a forward pass.

A wonderful team display from the whole squad, and which was certainly needed to beat a strong Penallta team. Well done to both sides for a very entertaining game of rugby and thanks to the coaches for all their hard work in preparing and developing the team. It was great to see some of the moves worked on in training during the game today #togetherasone.
