Caerphilly Bowl their way to the 2nd Round of the Swalec

Caerphilly made light work against a struggling Rhymney side at Virginia Park last weekend as they ran out winners by 57 points to 5 scoring 9 try’s and 6 conversions in the process.

It took just 4 minutes for the home side to cross for the first of their try’s. Centre Will Worthington collecting the ball down the left, cutting inside and running around the Rhymney defence to cross the try line, outside half Matthew Hurley adding the conversion.

Worthington grabbed his brace 5 minutes later as the Cheesemen broke through the centre, this time crossing out wide on the left. Two penalty misses by the visitors in the next quarter meant that the score remained at 12-0 until the 25th minute when a break through the centre by no.8 Josh Hayward took play deep into the 22. Re-cycling possession, the ball was spun wide to the wing where full back Stuart Thomas was on hand to collect and score in the corner. Hurley again adding the conversion.

A break through the centre, again, by Thomas, produced a converted try by Hurley, before Rhymney grabbed a consolation, intercepting the ball during another home break, the centre running the length of the field to score out wide. Hurley added his second try

Another converted try by Hurley just before the whistle left the home side ahead  33-5 at the interval, but more misery was to follow as captain Nathan Gittings went over 3 minutes into the second half, Hurley again adding 2 points followed by replacement hooker Anthony Payne crossing the whitewash just minutes later. Scrum half Joe Bray was next over the line after coming on for scrum half Phil Dymond, before the final nail in the coffin came on 60 minutes as Gittings crossed for his brace.

Following several injuries, the visitors were left with less than 12 men on the pitch, giving referee Mike England no option but to finish the match on safety grounds after just ¾ of the allotted time completed. The side join the other 63 clubs now in the 2nd round.

Caerphilly 1stXV travel Oakdale next weekend for a potential top of the table clash, early season, whilst the undefeated 2nd XV travel to Cambrian, sitting top of their league, in another top of the table clash. The Youth are home as they play just their second game of the Dragons DA league, travelling to Pontypool Utd. All games kick off at 2:30pm.
