Caerphilly RFC completed an 8 try romp against Llandaff North last weekend at the Constructaquote Stadium in Caerphilly last weekend, despite twice playing a man down, in the first round of the Swalec Bowl.  Centre Chris Thomas completed a hatrick, the second for the side in as many weeks, playing expansive rugby, whilst his central partner Matthew Nuthall scored a brace as the home side ran away with the tie.

The visitors started well with pressure, the home side unable to get out of their own half for the first quarter of an hour and losing captain Gareth England to the sin bin on 7 minutes only compounded the issue. Thomas then scored the his first try as Caerphilly eventually broke out, driving for the line before going over in the corner as the side recycled the ball to draw the defence. Outside half Joe Haley adding the spoils.

Hooker Rhys Cleverly was next to cross as they broke from deep with centre Nuthall. Moving wide to the left the side quickly moved up field before recycling right to draw the defence, the ball found its way back right and Nuthall was again in the move to distribute the final pass, Cleverly scoring wide left.

 Thomas added his second on 22 minutes following a Haley penalty miss leaving the score at 17-0 at the half time whistle, Caerphilly’s poor handling restricting all other scoring opportunities.

A second yellow card, this time No.8 Josh Williams transgressing, put Caerphilly on the back foot 5 minutes into the second half. During this period Llandaff North grabbed a converted try as they made use of the additional numbers at the breakdown area following a penalty which took them up to the 5 mtr line.

Once back to 15 Caerphilly broke loose in the final quarter of the game. Breaking from deep at every available opportunity the first to cross the line was flanker Craig Hudd on 57 minutes. Brett Davey sent out the replacements in force and the side continued to score. Right wing Will Worthington crossing in the corner 2 try’s from Nuthall, powering his way through from deep, and Thomas’s hat-trick as he found space in the centre to cross the line with 2 players on his back.

Caerphilly travel to Monmouth next weekend, resuming their league program. The second XV take a long trip to Builth Wells for their Rhondda and East Glamorgan game, whilst the Youth team travel to Risca in the first round of the Welsh Youth Cup. All games kicking off at 2:30pm.
