Caerphilly progressed to the 4th round of the Welsh Bowl competition at the Constructaquote Stadium last weekend with a 33-11 victory over Markham, centre Will Worthington grabbing a brace late in the second half, with outside half Matthew Hurley adding 13 points with 3 penalties and 2 conversions, the home side crossing 4 times during the game.
Caerphilly started briskly, Hurley adding a penalty in the opening minutes, before scrum half Jac Jonathon went over for a converted try after a break through the centre from Hurley, laying off to the scrum half to break through the gap.
Despite having most of the play the home side struggled to break down the opposition, with a single Hurley penalty, all they could muster until just before the interval. Having had a try disallowed from Captain Bob England with referee Jonathon Walters unsighted as the ball hit the deck, the home side re-gathered and drove again. Hooker Gareth Ogden drove through the defence and scored to give the home side a18-6 lead at the interval.
The visitors came out strong putting the Caerphilly defence through their paces for large parts of teh second half, but just weren’t able to break them down until the last 10 minutes. Caerphilly, despite playing the majority of the second half on the back foot Worthington scored a brace, the first starting with a well measured kick from a ruck by replacement scrum half Joe Bray. Running direct, flanker Chris Moss gathered in open space before releasing the centre on the half way line, going over in the corner. This allowed the home team breathing space at the end. Caerphilly’s only blemish was to allowing a solitude reply by the visitors in the corner as the defence went to sleep, leaving the final score at 33-11. Caerphilly 2nd team were unlucky not to end their friendly game against local rivals Senghenydd, going down to a last minute converted try by the visitors despite the best efforts of outside half Luke Williams, converting 6 penalties in their 18-22 defeat. Caerphilly Youth had a good win home against Abergavenny scoring 4 try’s and 2 conversions as Lewis Willacott crossed for 3, prop Joe McLoughlin chipping in with a try, Lewys Blakely adding 2 conversions.
