Stars in Green Eyes

Caerphilly welcomed Blackwood Stars to The Constructaquote Stadium last and wiped away the remanence of last week’s narrow defeat away with a 9 try thriller. Following Blackwood’s win against New Tredegar the Green and White’s were set for a tough game, but the visitors were blown away with some deft of hand and deep attacking which saw them penetrate the visiting defence from all over the field.

It took just 6 minutes for Caerphilly to take the lead, outside half Matthew Hurley converting a penalty, Blackwood Stars replying minutes later with 3 points of their own, Caerphilly restoring the lead 2 minutes later with another 3 points.

Good work by the forwards on the quarter hour mark saw them steal lineout ball. The forwards broke the defence and scrum half Jac Jonathon was on hand to go over under the posts for a converted try. Wing Will Worthington was next to cross following a break through the centre by Matthew Nuthall.

Chris Thomas, playing on the other wing was next to score out wide on the half hour mark, Hurley adding the difficult conversion followed just before half time by No.8 Josh Williams, powering his way through the defence. The only blemish on the first half was the sin binning of flanker Chris Moss for an infringement close to the line on the stroke of half time.

The second half saw the visitors grab a try with the home side down to 14 men, after a sustained period of pressure. However, Caerphilly powered ahead from this point running in 5 further tries. Worthington grabbed the second of his tries racing down the right wing, chipping ahead, the bounce of the ball favourable, to dive and ground over the line on 53 minutes. Coach Brett Davey rang in the changes and minutes later Centre Nuthall again broke the line, moving at pace down the left wing. Having been caught in the 22 the ball was laid back for full back Dewi Jones to cross the line.

Replacement second Row Gary Davies after a deft pass on the floor from Josh McCarthy on the floor, was next to cross following another break from deep, and the next by Hurley as replacement scrum half Joe Bray went flying down the right wing, laying the ball on the floor in the tackle it was collected to put the outside half in.

The final try of the game came courtesy of Worthington grabbing his hat trick in the 65-8Victory, both coaches happy about the commitment shown and the moves completed in a complete team performance.

Elsewhere Caerphilly Youth defeated Risca Youth 19-3 away with try’s by Lewys Willacot and a brace by Liam Waters, whilst the second XV were defeated 21-7 at Gilfach Goch.

Next week sees the 1stXV take on Llandaff North in the 1st round of the Swalec Bowl, the 2ndXV travel to Rhiwbina. Both kick off’s 2:30pm.
