U15's - "Tough Day On The Gwyndy"

Match Report - Sunday 18 November - KO 12.15 @ The Gwyndy 4G - Caerphilly v Pontypridd

It was a beautiful sunny and crisp Sunday morning when the Caer XV welcomed a strong and well drilled team to the Gwyndy.

The first drop out of the game sets the tone, with a high and hanging kick being caught by the strong sun, resulting in it bouncing. This enables the visitors to re-gather the ball at the start, gain a foothold in the home teams half and eventually, Ponty create a great rolling maul to crash over for first score 7-0.

A strong tackle by Ellis Hughes at full back stems the tide and saves a certain try, but a turnover at line out time enables the visitors to pass crisply along the line for the second score within the first 5 minutes of the game.

The initial onslaught continues and this time its Josh Morkot making a great tackle.

This seems to galvanise the home team into action and from a great line out take by Logan Turner, the ball is moved through the hands from Wil Lewis, Will Haley and Connor Mayo who releases Ellis Hughes on the wing to cut inside and score bringing the score to 5-12.

The game ebbs and flows for a while with the visitor pressure eventually leading to a Scrum V - Ponty’s strong number 8 picks up and drives over for a 5-19 lead.

Caerphilly hit straight back though and from a quick penalty the ball is moved along the back line in almost a carbon copy of the home team’s first try with Will Haley and Louis Bellamy, and then Owen Hughes releasing Ellis Hughes on the wing again to cut inside and bring the home team to within 1 score.

Half Time 12-19.

The break seems to favour the visitors rather than the home team, and despite a great turnover at the maul being won by Will Haley, and try saving tackles on the wing from Cian O’Sullivan, and Owen Hughes at centre, the flood of Ponty runners just keeps on coming.

Abhishek comes to the fore and puts in some great hits. At times the momentum is with Caerphilly and on another day some of the passes that just spill forward would have gone to hand and we would have been onside for two well weighted cross kicks, but alas it is not to be one of those days.

The visitors were quick to capitalise on the missed opportunities from the home team to tie the score and eventually not even some outstanding tackling from Eli Weekes Logan Turner and Tylor Williams can stop the Ponty score to take them 2 scores clear again at 12-24.

The next play sees a great tackle by Owen Wilding and then “Wil/Will squared” make a crunching double team tackle on the pacey Ponty winger in the corner to save a certain try. Ponty keep on coming through and eventually they crash over for a 12-29 lead.

Caerphilly show great character in keeping going to the end and it looks like they would get a consolation score, but alas a last-ditch tackle on a fast-moving Scott Pritchard and then crossing at the Scrum V, enables Pony to clear their lines.

A tough day at the office, and well done to all the boys who kept on going to the end - it was one of those days and thanks go to Luke Turner and Huw Ashman who played for the visitors. Chin up boys and on to next week!
