Another Bonus Point Loss for a Sorry 'Philly

An incoherent Caerphilly side went down fighting at Virginia Park last weekend. Lack of concentration and the inability to hold the ball proving their undoing against a well matched Caldicot side. The only difference between the sides a try by scrum half Liam Neill midway through the first half.

Caldicot took the lead courtesy of a penalty by centre Lloyd Mellens, before Simon Skinner equalised with a simple kick in front of the posts. The visitors went ahead on the quarter hour mark, the home side failing to pick up a run through the centre for Sion Lewis to cross for a converted try. Skinner kept the home side in touch with 2 penalties before Caldicot made the best of a broken Caerphilly attack.

Having taken the ball into contact, a fracas erupted on the half way line down the left, as the visitors turned over the ball. Staying alert as the Caerphilly players got involved, Neill calmly collected the ball at the base and darted down the tramline unopposed to cross for a converted try.

It took the home side right up to the half time whistle to reply as they lay siege on the visitors try line. No.8 Josh Hayward eventually broke through to power over the line, Skinner missing the conversion for the extra points.

The second half saw a resurgent Caerphilly side take to the field, but despite their best efforts, lack of discipline and poor concentration was instrumental in the breakdown of every move the home side produced. Captain and Full back Nathan Gittings brought the side within 2 points of the visitors, and set up a tense finish.

In the end, the home side failed to break out of their own 22 in the last 5 minutes and yielded a try to full back Joe Basjada, eventually securing 4 winning points for his side whilst condemning the home side to another bonus point loss.

Caerphilly 2nd XV failed to progress beyond the 1st round in the Ivor Williams Cup going down 24 points to 14 at Rhydyfelin, losing their 100% record for the season.

Caerphilly Welcome Aberbargoed to Virginia Park next weekend in their Swalec Bowl 2nd Round fixture, Kick off 1:30pm, whilst the 2nd Team and Youth take a small break.
