U15's - "Cae Prove Too Strong For United"

Match Report - Caerphilly v Pontypool United - Sunday 11 November - KO 11.30 @ Vetro Recruitment Stadium - Final Score 31-14

It turned out to be a warm and sunny autumn morning for the match, following some torrential showers earlier in the day which made for gloopy conditions. Prior to kick off, there was a one-minute silence for Remembrance Sunday in memory of those who had sacrificed so much, for so many.

The home XV welcomed a strong and physical Pontypool team and the opening exchanges were to set the tone. A great take from Ellis Hughes at fullback was returned to half way. The bulldozing Abhishek took the ball up further before it was spread across from Owen Hughes, Logan Turner, Connor Mayo and then to Scott Pritchard, who was eventually bundled into touch.

Some great tackles from Logan Turner and Eli Weekes thwarted some strong running from Pontypool. Eventually, the ball broke to Louis Bellamy who made a great run and chipped ahead to keep the visitors on the back foot.

Pontypool kept on coming though, and eventually their strong winger made good ground before a try saving tackle from Ellis Hughes. The ball was turned over at the ruck and was quickly moved by Lewis Adams and then Owen Hughes behind his own posts. The ball eventually found its way to Danny Richards who made good ground before a deft offload to Connor Mayo who ran from half way, dribbling the ball on 3 occasions, before eventually falling on the bouncing ball to score the first try.

The great defence continued with an outstanding tackle on their big centre by Louis Bellamy and this eventually set up a line out on the visitors 22. From first phase line out possession Scott Pritchard regathered a nice chip to off load to Abhishek at pace who sucked in 4/5 of the Pontypool team. This created space for the back line to make use of numbers and Louis Bellamy finished a great move in the corner for a 12-0 lead. Pontypool kept on coming through and their pressure eventually told with a quick penalty 10 yards out resulting in a try under the posts.

Half Time 12-7.

The highly entertaining encounter continued in the second half, with Huw Ashman this time taking a high kick, to then feed Abhishek. Scott Pritchard kicked downfield, and Pontypool decided this time to kick back. The ball was fielded by Connor Mayo who passed to Will Haley who ran a great angle to straighten up the line. Haley then made a flat pass back to Connor Mayo who ran in from half way to score in the corner.

The outstanding tackling continued across the team with Logan Turner again stopping Ponty’s largest player in his tracks supported by Tyler Williams and Callum Morris at the breakdown. The turnover enabled Will Haley to make a great kick to force a 5-metre scrum. From the scrum Scott Pritchard switched to scrum half and he picked up from the base to burst through 2 tackles and a 24-7 lead.

Pontypool kept on running straight through and eventually they received their just rewards scoring under the posts to bring the score to 24-14 with 5 mins to play.

The final score summed up the great team performance, with Tyler Williams winning an outstanding turnover, despite the attention of 5 Pontypool players. The ball was moved out by Lewis Adams, Huw Ashman and Owen Hughes before Scott Pritchard ran onto the ball at pace and, with Josh Morkot in close support, he managed to double dummy and score for a 31-14 win.

Well done to both teams for a great advert for rugby - a game played in tough conditions but where the outstanding tackling, great handling and quick movement of the ball from the home team laid the foundation for a well-earned win #togetherasone
