U15's - "Cae Victorious Against Physical Old Firm"

Match Report - Caerphilly v Mountain Ash - KO 11.30 - Sunday 17 March - Final Score 26-12

A beautiful spring morning welcomed a physical Mountain Ash team to the Vectro Recruitment today for a tough and well-matched encounter.

A strong tackle from Ioan Hill sets the tone for the match straight from start but the visitors quickly switch the point of attack and they switch play and run in smartly for the first score which is converted from out wide - 0-7 after 2 mins.

A great tackle by Callum Morris, is followed up by another from Will Haley and Wil Lewis which secures the turnover. Sam Davies takes the ball up strongly and wins the penalty at ruck time. Ioan Hill takes the tap quickly and Will Haley spreads the ball wide to Josh Morkot who makes a strong run to score 5-7.

The ebb and flow of the match continues between two well matched teams and this time it’s Scott Pritchard who makes a strong run forward before feeding Will Haley who sends a long kick to pin the visitors back in their half. Mountain Ash come forward again, but Caer win the turnover and it’s Owen Hughes’ turn to take a great line to split the defence and set up play in midfield.

From the resultant scrum, the visitors’ defence holds true and they win a turnover of their own and bring the ball upfield before a strong tackle from Tylor Williams. The tackle dislodges the ball and enables Will Haley to put pressure back on their pacey fullback with a well-placed kick.

The pressure from Mountain Ash however is relentless at this stage and Will Haley bravely dives on the ball to win a penalty. The visitors win another turnover though, but a great tackle by Cian O’Sullivan out wide saves a certain try.

Next it’s Owen Hughes with another tackle to halt a try, but Mountain Ash eventually win a scrum 5 and the pressure tells with their strong number 8 picking up to score 5-12.

A nicely placed re-start from Will Haley provides some much-needed momentum back to the home XV and a scrum 5 sees Scott Pritchard make good ground before a deft offload to Tylor Williams who steams through at pace to draw the scores level at 12-12 as the half time whistle blows.

The second half resumes as the first ended with the visitors putting the home team under intense pressure and it’s a try saving tackle by Ellis Hughes that stops a certain try. Abhishek, Eli Weekes and Scott Pritchard get back to win a turnover.

Will Haley then kicks for position again and Ellis Hughes and Danny Richards follow up hard to force a kick back. Callum Morris gathers and passes to Josh Morkot who makes good ground before being tackled into touch on the line.

The home team then start to let the ball do the work and Owen Hughes straightens up the line at fly half and releases Connor Mayo into space. Connor kicks ahead, and Hugh Ashman follows up strongly with Louis Bellamy and they win back the ball. The ball comes to Abhishek but alas he is held up over the line and the visitors clear. Ellis Hughes takes the kick and then some neat interplay by Connor Mayo and Ioan Hill makes ground back into the 22.

Another kick out of defence is gathered by Ellis Hughes and he passes to Cian O’Sullivan who passes along the line to Connor Mayo and then Scott Pritchard who straightens up for a great score 19-12, converted by Lewis Adams.

The momentum is now with Caer and it seems that their larger squad has enabled the team to keep a little in reserve. It’s Caer who win the ruck and Ioan Hill makes a nice pass to Owen Hughes who dances through 4 tackles and straightens up through the gap to score a great try under the posts 26-12 🏉

Great tackles from across the team keep the visitors in their own half and the home team close the game out. Well done to the whole squad for a real team effort - great tackling and the availability of a larger squad all played their part today and we wish all the injured a speedy recovery ! - Will Haley (Head), Wil Lewis (Ribs), Luke Stone (Neck) and Hugh Ashman (Calf) 🤕🤒 #togetherasone
