U14’s MATCH REPORT

Caerphilly 29 - Whiteheads 26

On a very warm and sunny morning the Cheesemen welcomed a strong Newport Whiteheads side to the Constructaquote stadium. A minute's silence was observed in memory of Newport boy Tom Rowe, a close friend of boys in the under 16 team, who sadly passed away on Friday.

From the start it was clear that the sides were well matched, with end to end running and tackling from both teams.

A period of relentless pressure saw the Whiteheads kick to clear their lines, which Scott Pritchard deftly fielded on the 22 before running through numerous tackles to score. The riposte came quickly though from the Whiteheads, with strong running bursting through a ruck on half way to score.

The game flowed well and eventually Caer found themselves pressuring the try line again. Eventually a good pick up from the scrum saw Connor Mayo cross for Caerphilly's' second try. However, the visitors again responded swiftly when they pounced on a kick and went blind to run over for a well worked try.

Further concerted pressure saw Tom Williams finish off a nice move on the wing following a crash ball by Will Haley, supported by Scott Pritchard ,which sucked in the defence to create space out wide.

The Whiteheads responded with a long period of possession but their passing was intercepted by the quick thinking Will Haley who scored under the posts. This clearly had an impact on the visitors and Caer, with their tails now up, supported a strong run from Ellis Hughes at full back, with Louis Bellamy making further ground before Callum Morris dabbed the ball over from short range to create daylight between the teams for the first time.

The score though seemed to motivate the visitors who made a strong finish to the game with their excellent winger scoring two long range tries in short succession, to bring them back to within 3 points.

With 10 minutes to go however, great spirit and some outstanding tackling across the team kept the visitors at bay for a well -deserved and hard fought for win. Well done boys; great to see the spirit at the end to earn the win.

Keep up the good work  #togetherasone.
