All Blacked Out

For the 2nd week running Caerphilly failed to gain any league points as they went down to local rivals Blackwood at Glan yr Afon Park last weekend, the side guilty of spilling the ball on the way to the try line on no fewer than six occasions. In fact it was the story of the day as the visitors continuously gave possession away to the Gwent side yielding possession throughout the game with poor handling.

Caerphilly took the lead on 6 minutes courtesy of the boot of Outside half Matthew Hurley with a penalty in front of the posts as the home side were caught offside in midfield during a Caerphilly attack. The home side took the lead with a try 5 minutes later, against the run of play thanks initially to a silly penalty on half way line enabling them to kick for a corner touch then catch and drive their way to the line, full back Nathan Gittings adding the conversion.

Blackwood extended thieir lead minutes later as the hooker found space and drove through for another converted try just after some fisticuffs saw the sin binning of 2 players from either side as tempers flared, Blackwood fielding no fewer than 5 ex Caerphilly players. Caerphilly reacted and although they had the majority of the play, ball handling let them down. Will Worhtington was unlucky not to score as he chased a kick ahead only to drop the ball as he collected it metres short of the line.  The winger was on hand, however to score Caerphilly’s 1st try on the stroke of half time, crossing in the corner as the visitor’s broke form deep again. Hurley falling short with the conversion to narrow the half time score to 14-8.

The second half started well for the Green and White’s, centre Liam Union crossing on 44 minutes as the visitors stretched the home defence, Hurley pushing the conversion just wide. Caerphilly struggled for platform all game, missing a few key players and were made to pay for their poor application on the day.

The home side crossed the whitewash on 2 further occasion in the 2nd half on 58 and 65 minutes thanks to some enterprising play, making the best of Caerphilly’s spurned chances, Gittings converting both tries to give the home side a commanding 28 points. Despite Caerphilly’s persistence they failed to trouble the scoreboard again, and the game finally finished with the visitors again attacking before spilling the ball with the try line begging.

Caerphilly welcome Abercarn to the Constructaquote Stadium this Saturday, Kick off 2:30pm, whilst the Youth welcome Cardiff Met in the WRU Cup, 2pm kick off. The seconds travelling to Nelson following their 28-11 win last weekend, kicking off at 2:30pm.
