Caerphilly Bears 2-Rhiwbina 2
Our second game of the day against first-time opponents from Rhiwbina offered the same free flowing rugby as the first. Again, defences were on top with little opportunity for both teams to create try-scoring opportunities. The Bears, however, were not be denied. A sweeping move from one side of the pitch to the other with the ball passing through numerous pairs of hands resulted in a try for the little man with the twinkling toes, Teifi, to use his dazzling footwork to cross for the try.

Rhiwbina came out for the second half with a renewed vigour and piled on the pressure and after a short passage of play, one of their stand-out players made a break from inside his own half and sprinted clear to score their equalising try in the corner. The game continued with some uncharacteristic handling errors from the Bears causing much consternation amongst the Coaches, so much so that, if Neil was fortunate enough to have some, he would have been tearing his hair out! Still, the Bears held out and it was not long before they edged ahead in the game again. This time, it was down to our own speedster, Devon, to show Rhiwbina that anything they could do, we could do too. When he picked the ball up in his own half, it didn’t look like anything was on but he managed to create some space for himself out wide and then used his searing pace to cross the Rhiwbina try line. Rhiwbina’s heads did not drop though and, right on the stroke of full time, they got their just rewards to score the equalising try. So, the game finished honours even for two well matched teams.

Man of the Match Luke Hopkins was man of the match for the second week running, following on from his man of the match performance against Pontypool United. A unanimous decision from all coaches, Luke led from the front, his tenacious tackling setting the standard for his team-mates to follow. Luke also made a telling contribution in attack as well as defence. His consistency has certainly given the boys something to aim for.
