SUPER SNEGGY TAME THE BEARS

Our first home game for two weeks and everyone was on tenterhooks ……. Would the power supply be working in Café Verde? Thankfully our fears were unfounded and the Bears Ladies were able to do what they do best on kitchen duty – provide much needed Sunday morning sustenance to those who may have overindulged the night before …. (you know who you are!!).

As always, a veritable feast of various liquid refreshments and artery clogging fry-ups were on offer as well as cakes and sweets for the sweet toothed among us. One particular special this week which the author can heartily recommend was the Luxury Hot Chocolate, complete with whipped cream and marshmallows!

Anyway, I digress. “What about the rugby!?” I hear you cry. We welcomed local rivals Senghenydd and, from over the mountain, Rhiwbina, to Virginia Park this week. Senghenydd were up first. Following last week’s much improved performance against Pontypool United and after the training session with the Dragons on Friday, the Bears were ready to roar. The prematch speeches by Coaches Neil, Michael and Jason would have made Jim Telfer proud in their passion and intensity. Over the last few years, we’ve had some humdingers against Sneggy with honours even and today’s game provided more of the same.

Caerphilly Bears 1-Senghenydd 4

Both teams went hammer and tongs at each other from the kick off. A courageous defensive display from the Bears repelled the probing attacks from Senghenydd. Both teams were well matched, some big hits going in from both sets of players, Senghenydd having the slight edge in the speed of their passing and running lines. Not that the Bears didn’t have their moments either, with ‘Big Bus’ Logan busting through their first up tacklers on a couple of occasions. Senghenydd were only able to breach the Bears defence on one occasion and took this narrow lead into half-time.

H-T: Caerphilly Bears 0-Seghenydd 1

The second half was more of the same. Competitive rugby played at a high intensity well refereed by Jason, keeping the bumper crowd fully entertained. Very little to choose between the two teams, the difference again being the slicker handling from Senghenydd with their sustained pressure resulting in a further three scores as the Bears tired. Not that we did not have our moments though, and we got on the scoresheet with a trademark score by H-Bomb, stepping, jinking and dummying his way through Senghenydd’s stout defence to cross the line.

F-T: Caerphilly Bears 1-Senghenydd 4

All-in-all, it is fair to say that the scoreline flattered Senghenydd, the game being far closer than the scoreline suggests. Every one of the boys taking the momentum from last week’s game and taking it up another level again. Bring on the rematch!
