Senghenydd welcomed the visitors on this occasion to the Gwyndy 4G pitch early this afternoon for what turned out to be a brilliant game of rugby, on a warm and overcast December day.

The opening encounters set the tone for the match with outstanding tackling from the outset from Connor Mayo and Eli Weekes keeping the home team at bay.

Eventually, the Caerphilly team, playing a penalty advantage saw Owen Hughes make a fantastic run from full back to set up great field position. Cian O'Sullivan eventually gathered the ball on the wing following good hands along the back line and brought the ball back in field. The subsequent ruck enabled Will Haley to take the ball up and release Connor Mayo to score the first try, half way through the opening half.

There was a quick repost however with a quick tap penalty releasing the home team's strong running number 12 who ran straight through to score from long range.

The forwards competed well at breakdown time and a combined effort from Logan Turner and Ioan Hill won a great turnover which enabled some outstanding interplay between Connor Mayo and Owen Hughes only to be called back for a forward pass.

Some strong forward play from Senghenydd saw turnovers of their own as Caerphilly appeared to commit less players at ruck time as the match continued; a dropped pass however enabled some good back play to release Danny Richards who made good ground only to be stopped a metre short of the line. The forwards though were quick to support with Ioan Hill securing the ball enabling Callum Morris to crash through from short range to score.

Half time 5 -14

The second half continued with the outstanding defensive display with Wil Lewis's tackle winning a turnover for Caerphilly releasing Danny Richards to make another strong run.

Great passing almost led to a score, but another turnover saw Will Haley and Oliver Scarfe this time combine to bring down their strong number 12 to save a certain try.

With 8 minutes to go some great direct attacking play created a 5 man overlap to seal a certain victory but a double movement saw a penalty awarded the other way and Senghenydd cleared their lines. This made for a tense final 5 minutes but the Caer 15 put in a huge defensive effort with Owen Wilding, Louis Bellamy, Ellis Hughes and Huw Ashman all putting in telling tackles as the minutes ticked away.

Eventually however, a loose pass by Senghenydd enabled a scrambling defence to clear their line and a final turnover from the resultant kick sealed a hard-fought win for the Cheesemen.

Well done to both teams for a highly entertaining game and a hard-fought encounter played in a sporting manner #togetherasone.
