Caerphilly Bears 7-Ynysowen 2

Our second opponents of the day were from the Merthyr Vale, Ynysowen, who were an unknown quantity as we had not played them previously. If the Bears were nervous about this, it certainly didn’t show, with another scintillating demonstration of both attacking and defensive rugby football.

The day was warming up in more ways than one, with Michael stripping down to his base layer revealing slightly more timber than he intended.

Some really attractive handling and running lines from the kick off, another well executed switch catching the defence off guard, with Devon receiving the ball to glide through the gap to cross for try number one.

Try two came after a big hit from Logan who then won the turnover to make a clean line break after a great pick up off the floor before offloading to Owen to cruise in for his first try.

Bears third try and Owen’s second of the game came after yet another bone-crunching tackle from Logan, freeing up the ball this time for Owen to pick up and run in.

Try four came from Connor. Taking the ball as first receiver, a mesmerising jinking run took him through the gap in the defence to score.

Try four was followed by a score from Ynysowen right on the stroke of half-time.

The second half and the relentless attacks from the Bears continued unabated.

Try five - another H-Bomb special. After a slick passing move from one side of the pitch to the other, Hywel received the ball, threw an outrageous dummy which Mark Ring would have been proud of before outstripping the defence to score.

Try six quickly followed and was scored by Riley. He took the ball at pace on the gain line showing a real turn of pace to ghost through the gap before crossing in the corner.

The seventh and final try came following a great break by Sam Colwill with the ball passing through the hands to find Luke who, after stepping inside and embarking on another mazy run, evaded the would-be tacklers to score in the corner.

Final word went to Ynysowen, who managed a consolation score right on the full time whistle.

F-T Caerphilly Bears 7-Ynysowen 2

In summary, the Bears built on the confidence gained from last week’s games to provide us with another marvellous display of rugby. The line speed in defence was outstanding, the opposition having no time on the ball to form any attacks, although they were a bit over-eager on occasions with Neil having to ping them for being offside but this can be easily rectified. Their attacking play really is something to behold, exemplifying the “Space and Support” philosophy that Neil, Michael and Jason have instilled in them. As always, ALL boys played their part and it was nice to see some new names getting in on the try scoring act this week.

Special thanks to my video editors this week, Phil and Rachel, who provided me with the DVD to enable my video analysis of today’s games. A couple of highlights from today’s games came in the footage against Ynysowen. You may recall they had one particularly big unit who became the immovable object when being tackled by Owen and Devon. They both got in big hits with real rings of steel but do you think they could knock him over? No chance! While they both clung on to him for dear life, he just looked at them with disdain!

Man of the Match

The easiest decision so far for this one, this week’s award going to Logan Dellanna. He was absolutely inspired today, his tackling really setting the standard. His many line breaks were also outstanding, punching holes in the defence at will.

Most improved contribution

Another unanimous decision from the assessors, this week’s most improved contribution came from Sammy Jones. He was really up for it this week, a great offload in attack combined with four big tackles made him a worthy recipient of this award.

That’s it from me for this week. No match report from me for next week I’m afraid as we are away. I’m now off to make an appointment with my GP because I think I may have developed RSI in my wrists writing up all these tries ……..
