Match Report - Caerphilly v Pentrych

- KO 11.30 - Sunday 7 October - Final Score 29-19

Caerphilly under 15's welcomed the Tyrchs to the Vetro Recruitment Stadium on a beautifully warm and sunny autumn morning. It was clear from the onset that Pentyrch were a strong and well-disciplined team, and the game started with great attacking moves and defence from both teams.

Tyler Williams was the first to feature with a strong tackle from a free kick enabling a turnover. This was followed by a strong break from Will Haley who then varied the attack with a well weighted kick - alas the move was to break down on the visitors' line but an early penalty saw the home XV take a 3-0 lead.

From the restart, Lewis Adams distributed the ball crisply to the back line and eventually Josh Morkot made good ground. The ball was recycled by Tyler Williams in close support at ruck time and centre Louis Bellamy threw a dummy to ghost through at pace under the sticks for a 10-0 lead.

Momentum was clearly with the home team at this point and Abhishek and Ioan Hill straightened up the line to make good ground before Will Haley finished off a great team move in the corner and a 17-0 lead.

The next play saw another long-range run from the pacey Josh Morkot but he was stopped just short by the strong Tyrch defence. In open play then, the visitors made ground into the Caer half but great tackling from Logan Turner, Huw Ashman and Louis Bellamy thwarted the attack. The visitors though never dropped their heads and at this point their strong running centre kicked ahead and regathered the ball to bring the score to 17-5 at half time.

The second half continued where the first left off as Wil Lewis took a great pass from Eli Weekes to make good ground before being brought down just short of the line. The ball was recycled though and eventually a penalty saw Abhishek crash through at pace from 5 metres to take a 24-5 lead.

Great tackling by Luke Stone thwarted another attack and a determined long-range run from Owen Hughes this time is stopped just short before close support saw the ball recycled out to Connor Mayo who finished a great team try on the wing and a 29-5 lead.

To the credit of Pentyrch they never gave up and some strong rucking and crisp passing eventually received its just rewards to take the score to 29-12 in the final minutes. The last play of the game also belonged to the visitors who, despite an excellent tackle from Louis Bellamy, scored a further try which brought the score to 29-19 at the final whistle.

Well done to both teams for a hard-fought game of rugby played in good spirits with great encouragement and support from both sets of coaches. It was a pleasure to watch and congratulations to Caerphilly on a great display of passing and variation of play which secured the 6th win of the season #togetherasone
